Thirty plus years ago I dove deep into learning all I could about creativity. My two children inspired my quest. I wanted to do everything possible to nurture their creative spirits. In the process, my own creative spirit burst forth and I have been sharing what I learn along the way at every point possible. This has included leading workshops near and far with teachers, communication professionals, and writers. 

I am grateful to Dorian Martin, founder of I Start Wondering, for inviting me to write about a subject I am passionate about.

Call me a midnight owl. I find I’m most productive in the evening hours after everyone sleeps and phones calls and text messages cease. However, as I age and realize I need more sleep, I am trying to adjust my schedule, find other times in the day when my creative spirit can take flight. ...

Hurricane season makes me worry. I dread the unpredictable, capricious nature of these storms fueled by warm waters, moist air, spiraling winds. Be prepared, we’re reminded. However, it’s not just this season that presents such uncertainty. Throughout our daily pilgrimage, a host of unknown storms bully their way into our peace. The pandemic certainly terrorized the world in 2020 and continues to keep us on alert.

After more than a year of living amid a pandemic, our creativity is starting to reemerge as we find our pace in moving forward out of a “collective grief.” Yes, it has been a rough period. We have been intimately connected to losses — the death of loved ones, the loss of employment, the disconnection from our community, the abrupt stop to many of our plans. Caution became the order of the day as we ceased to hug and kiss people in greeting. We grew paranoid about anything we touched. As our social worlds begin to open back up, so too can we reboot our creative lives.
