The why of it

Days can rush by. It’s important to take notice of what sparks joy in our lives – a warm cup of tea, a quiet moment without interruption, a yellow kiskadee outside my window. It’s up to each of us to carve out moments that allow us to breathe, to take it all in, to zoom in on even the little things we might take for granted.

As a poet, I believe I try to be someone on which nothing is lost. But I do run into seasons of my life where I let all the to dos and deadlines take control, leaving me off-kilter. Prayer, I find, is essential. I also rely on moments of linger and travel to regain my balance.

As we say goodbye to summer, with only four more months in the year left, I want to be more intentional about paying attention. I am hoping that by sharing the small joys found in the moments where I can linger, muse and breathe, I will maintain balance and at the same time engage in a conversation with others about things that matter.

While exploring Ireland a few weeks ago I picked up a book by the Swedish designer and photographer Elisabeth Dunker. Her book and design company evolved from her blog “Fine Little Day,” where she provides snapshots of everyday life and items that catch her interest. Like Dunker, I think we are all sharing bits and pieces of our lives on social media. I believe our posts can serve as counterpoints to the dark clouds of chaos and uncertainty in the world that try to wipe away what is life giving.

It’s important to celebrate all the beauty and good in our lives. It is a way of spreading light so that God’s hope in the world prevails. We need to remember God is in everything.

What sparks joy for you? In these future posts, I will share the sparks I find from day to day.
